Tolima is the country's third largest coffee producing region and accounts for 12% of the country's production. Here in the western part of the country, the plantations are located on the slopes of the Andes and the region is challenging to reach due to the topography. Coffee is grown at an altitude of 1200 - 2100 meters. The indigenous coffee varieties Colombia, Castillo and Tabi are mostly grown. The region is also a strong stronghold for the FARC guerrillas. Many cooperatives are trying to attract unemployed young people by offering training in coffee cultivation and production as a better alternative to joining the guerrillas. Here, they grow organically and Fairtrade certified.
