The story of Kosta begins in 1742, just over 250 years ago. Two of Charles XII's slaves, appreciated for their efforts in the wars, were each awarded a governor's post, one in Växjö and the other in Kalmar. These two founded - on behalf of King Fredrik I - in 1742 the glassworks Kosta.

Kosta got its name from the founders themselves, Anders Koskull and Georg Bogislaus Stael von Holstein, Ko-Sta and after a while the whole community came to be named after the growing glassworks. Window glass, bottles and tableware for the royal houses, chandeliers for churches and manors - this is what production looked like for the first 150 years.

The first glassblowers were immigrant masters from German Bohemia. They mastered a professional knowledge that for generations was passed down from father to son. Under the leadership of masters from Kosta, over time, one glass cabin after another grew up in the forests around Kosta.

In step with industrialization, increased construction and prosperity for more people, the demand for glass grew. During the second half of the 19th century, just over 100 years after Kosta, most of Sweden's glassworks were founded. Many of them with the help of masters and glassblowers from Kosta, which resulted in Kosta being called "the mother farm in the Swedish glass industry".

Until the end of the 19th century, the glass in Kosta was designed by the glassworkers themselves or by the customer. At the Stockholm Exhibition in 1897, the glassworks was criticized for its uniformity, after which the idea of hiring designers in the production process was born. The first designer associated with Kosta was Gunnar G: son Wennerberg in 1898. Ever since then, a large number of designers have enriched the mill's glass tradition. A tradition that designers and craftsmen are constantly developing.
